Peer Presentation: HU's Finest

A peer group presentation I witnessed was HU’s Finest.  They presented on

HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Washington, D.C.

First off they mention how it’s called an epidemic because it affects more than 1% of the population. They start off by introducing AIDS.

•  It is the final stage of HIV
• Affects any major body organs
• Is obtained by external means
• The greatest increase in AIDS cases in D.C. are among people of color, women, and children

Also, people can get infected by injection because it’s easily transmitted through needles and creates more of a risk the more of a drug user someone is.  HU’s Finest also stated statistics such as

• 1 in 20 adults in D.C. has HIV
• 3% of the diagnosed population that has HIV estimated that 5% of the population actually have HIV

There are organizations in Washington, D.C. related to HIV/ AIDs some are

• Family Medical and Counseling Services
• Prevention Works, Women’s Collective
• Grassroots project

They say politicians are helping by helping find a cure and funding researches in labs. The sociological Impact of Aids is it extends far beyond individuals and their families. It’s not like every epidemic because there is no quick death sweeping through a country’s population, and many HIV positive people come from poor and disadvantaged groups; mainly African-Americans and homosexuals.

This group presented very well.  Knew the information they were presenting and had a nice slide layout. They provided background information, statistics, and facts. They did something that is common among society today of people becoming aware about it. I commend this group for their presentation.
