The lecture given this week was titled: Abandonment, Dismemberment, and Reawakening: The History and Legacy of Howard. The speaker Georgia M. Dungston, Ph.D began by asking us what DNA is. We discussed that DNA is the universial code of life that is passed down to us individually. Ms. Dungston then made us repeat "I am on time, I am on point, I am on purpose". This quote was very inspiring and it made me think.
Ms. Dungston went on to say that we are currently in a knowledge revolution. Quality, speed, and volume are the drive for this revolution. Also we are living in the information age in which we learn for wisdom to solve problems. We need wisdom to do what we were put on Earth to do.
Ms. Dungston also lectured about the genome. She said that the genome is unique and is about self-discovery. The genome is a complete set of instructions our parents gave us in our DNA to make up the body. It has the knowledge about who we are. Howard University has the only Human Genome Center in the United States. The three things the human genome gives us in total inheritance are: 1.) Amount of info we use to describe ourselves and superficially requires less than 1/10 of 1% of our total inheritance, 2.) It takes less than 2% of your total inheritance to make all the parts of your body, and 3.) To enjoy total life and health, we need to be aware of our complete inheritance.
Ms. Dungston's lecture was very informative and inspiring. She made me proud to be a Howard bison because we have the only Human Genome Center. Moreover, she proved that the genome goes beyond science and it is our time to obtain knowledge.
